Vernon Gilbert Bailey Jr., 79, of the 1200 block of Laskin Road, died June 3, 2004, in Chesapeake. A native of South Norfolk, he was the son of the late Vernon Gilbert Bailey Sr. and Pearl Russell Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a former member and lay leader of Oaklette United Methodist Church and for the past 23 years he was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, where he also served as a lay leader. Mr. Bailey was the former owner of Portlock Variety Store, Baileys Family Shoe Store and Powers and Winston Dept. Store and retired as vice president of Burton Lumber Corp. after 30 years of service. A public meeting on the future of farms and food in Erie County will be held at 7 p.m. in the Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 21 S. Grove St., East Aurora. The hosts, the Erie County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board and the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning, are looking for suggestions on what can be done to support agriculture here.
