LONG BEACH, Calif. - Thousands of California college students and faculty led marches and occupied a campus administration building Wednesday in protest of state budget cuts to education that could lead to higher tuition, larger class sizes and lower enrollment. The rallies and teach-ins were part of a day of protest planned for all 23 California State University campuses. Similar events were planned at campuses in Massachusetts and New Jersey, where legislators are slashing education spending to close huge budget shortfalls.
I think he's one of the most handsome men in the world, and I'm dying to get in there and get my book signed," said one young Black lady, who was at the very back of the long line. "One of the reasons I think he's so popular is because of his compassion, especially for us. And coming from a white man, born and raised in the South, you know that's something special. Then, after a moment of laughter, [Bill Clinton] offered a more serious response. "I think that any group of people that intergenerationally has been subjected to any kind of discrimination or prejudice has extremely good antennae," he began. "This is a feel of knowing who's pulling for them and who's not. And I was born into a highly unusual family of lower-class white Southerners without much education after World War II,...
William Fleming High School Principal Susan Willis and four other school administrators inappropriately kept 31 students with disabilities out of state tests over the past two years, according to a report from the Virginia Department of Education. Administrators altered class schedules so that lower-performing students would not take Standards of Learning tests, the report said. That practice may have artificially boosted William Fleming's overall pass rates and made it more likely the school would meet state and federal benchmarks.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Freshmen who struggle in reading class have a new assignment this fall at Naperville Central High School: more time in the gym. Long regarded as a leader in physical education reform, the Naperville school's latest effort involves trying new research linking increased physical activity with academic success. A small group of students with lower reading scores takes a specially designed physical education class immediately before their literacy course.

Teachers are always in short supply, and local officials are finding it a little more difficult to staff schools with Georgia's state-mandated smaller classes. Fourteen Richmond County schools and a school in Columbia County are asking permission from the Georgia Board of Education to be exempt from the lower class-size limits required by the Truth in Class Size Act. The act is part of former Gov. Roy Barnes' education reform plan that Gov. Sonny Perdue and legislators suspended until this year.
In "No child left behind?" (letter, Sept. 21), Sheena Russell asks why her child was not entitled to the benefit of a preschool education at no charge simply because he has lower-middle-class working parents. Ms. Russell is not alone. Children who start school behind often stay behind. And for parents and caregivers who recognize this dilemma and want to do something about it, cost and accessibility to high-quality early care and education in South Hampton Roads are problematic.
DENVER - Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ken Salazar on Thursday chided his Republican opponent, Pete Coors, for not having an education plan. Salazar stood in front of his two daughters' Denver high school and called for an additional $9 billion a year in federal education funding to improve teacher quality and lower class sizes.

Financial literacy has become more important than ever as an increasing number of college students are relying on credit cards to finance their education. We examine whether college students are knowledgeable about finance, whether they improve upon that knowledge, and whether their demographic profile, financial backgrounds, and engagement/motivation level affect their financial knowledge and learning. Recruiting students who voluntarily participated in the pre- and post-tests of personal finance and managerial finance, and using multiple regression and the results of student course evaluations, we find that using finance courses positively affect the students' financial literacy. Moreover, we find that gender difference is found only in the pre-test of managerial finance, that female ...
