Mr. [Lowell Hawthorne] is from a large family - 11 siblings in all - and is a past student of Oberlin High School. He left Jamaica when he was 20 and quickly adjusted to the fast-paced life of New York City. He now heads one of the largest Caribbean bakery/restaurant businesses in the 'Big Apple', and come August 13, he will open his 100th franchise as he launches into that phase of the business. TEANECK -- District administrators are expected to give a presentation Wednesday on plans to improve student achievement after a report showed that four out of seven schools failed to meet federal benchmarks for improvement.
Hawthorne and Lowell elementary schools and Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson middle schools did not make Adequate Yearly Progress in 2011 under the No Child Left Behind standards and are required to submit a plan for improvement to the state by November, said Vincent McHale, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
