A low-fat diet will help you lose weight. Or is it a low- carbohydrate diet? Pore over decades of research and dozens of studies over this debate and you're likely to be confused about the best way to go about reducing your waistline.
I think lowering carbs is what you should do," says Heather Straight, a Pleasant Hill, Calif., mom of three who says she's tried several diets. "At least, I think so.

LOS ANGELES - The prospect of going on a diet makes many people nervous. Once cravings for verboten foods set in, dieters may fall off the wagon. But a study finds that over time, restricting some foods may tamp down those cravings.
The study centered on 270 men and women who were randomly assigned to a low-carbohydrate diet or a low-fat diet for two years. Those on the low-carb diet were told to limit carbohydrates and eat foods high in fat and protein. Those on the low-fat diet cut back on calories and fat and received about 15 percent of calories from protein, 30 percent from fat and 55 percent from carbohydrate.

The Medical Society of the State of New York advises patients that the days of people eating pasta for the purpose of losing weight may be over for good. The New England Journal of Medicine released a report July 17 that compared three types of diets, and, supporting earlier but shorter studies, lowcarbohydrate diets (popularized by Atkins) won again. Along with Mediterranean diets, which also did well, the low-carbohydrate diets produced greater weight loss and more favorable metabolic events than low-fat diets.
* The mean weight loss was slightly greater with the low-carbohydrate diet (4.7 kg) than with the Mediterranean (4.4 kg)-about 10 pounds for each-but both resulted in significantly greater weight loss than with the low-fat diet (2.9 kg)-about 6 pounds. Men fared better with the...

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia 25 years ago. I have strictly followed the diet I was instructed to follow, a high- protein, low-carbohydrate diet with six small meals a day. The doctor who made the diagnosis has died, and I have a new one who doesn't believe I have hypoglycemia. He told me I can eat whatever I want. What's your opinion? - R.O.
ANSWER: Not so long ago, hypoglycemia - low blood sugar - was an in-vogue condition popularized in many magazines and adopted by many celebrities. It isn't a common disorder, and far too many people were told they had it when they really did not.

Johnson presents a response to the criticisms of his article, "The Skinny Fat," which looks specifically at low carbohydrate diet plans. He claims that the overall conclusion that can be drawn about any sort of diet is that it will work if it reduces energy intake and is something that one can maintain for extended period. Obesity is a problem that requires solutions more complex than simply eliminating one nutrient from one's diet. Meanwhile, Marshall Deutsch stresses that Patrick Johnson demonstrates appropriate skepticism toward claims that the Atkins and other low-carbohydrate diets will help one to lose weight and keep it off, but accepts without critical examination allegations that it is desirable for many people to lose weight.
