• Mona Lisa Moving to Louvre Abu Dhabi?

French President [Jacques Chirac] described the agreement as an important way of bridging what the "world considers a clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West. But Abu Dhabi's art conquest has become a subject of scandal and controversy among French elitists who believe the Republic's cultural integrity is being sold off for petrodollars. In an attempt to ease tensions, the culture minister insisted, "We're not selling the French legacy and heritage. We want this culture to radiate to parts of the world that value it." He added, "We're proud that Abu Dhabi wants to bring the Louvre here. We're not here to transform culture into a consumer product." Critics remain unconvinced.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates France's storied Louvre museum, home to priceless art works including the Mona Lisa, said Tuesday it will open a new Louvre in this Persian Gulf boomtown, prompting outcries from some who accuse the museum of shilling France's patrimony for $1.3 billion in oil money. The 30-year agreement, signed by French Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres and the head of Abu Dhabi's tourism authority, Sheik Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, opens the way for the Louvre Abu Dhabi to display thousands of works from some of France's best museums, such as the Louvre, the Georges Pompidou Center, the Musee d'Orsay and Versailles.

Two news items caught my attention in the last week: No. 1: Dateline Abu Dhabi -- The Louvre Museum is selling the use of its name for a museum for $520 million and will rent some of its art exhibits and provide technical museum management services for another $747 million.

In the last week, two news items caught my attention. News item No. 1: Dateline Abu Dhabi The Louvre Museum is selling the use of its name for a museum in Abu Dhabi for $520 million, and will rent out some of its art exhibits and provide technical museum management services for another $747 million. News item No. 2: Dateline Dubai The Halliburton Corp. is moving its worldwide corporate headquarters to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai. It will keep most of its staff in Houston, will maintain its legal incorporation in the United States, will remain listed on the New York Stock Exchange, but will list its shares on a Middle East exchange also.
