  • In the current session of the Missouri General Assembly new laws abound. Two that should be defeated would require a student member on the University of Missouri Board of Curators and cap county property assessment increases for tax purposes. The student curator idea was derailed last session when Gov. Matt Blunt vetoed a bill, but it resurfaces in an amendment sponsored by Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, to a proposal by David Pearce, R- Warrensburg, that would allow the governor to appoint two members from a single congressional district.

  • Funeral services for Mary Lou Ivey Garnto, age 89, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Ivey Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Revs. Louis Pearce and Phil Wilson will officiate. Born July 30, 1916, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late William R. (Bill) and Nancy Jane Logue Ivey. She taught in one room schools in the Scott community and was later employed in manufacturing, retiring in the late 1980's. Ms. Garnto was a charter member of Ivey Baptist Church where she remained active in several positions within the church that she dearly loved. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Horace Shelmon Garnto, her sisters and brother, Essie Lee I. Price, Willie Mae I. Jackson and Harvey Ivey.

  • John H. Holt, age 86, of Swainsboro, entered into rest on Sunday, October 9, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness. Funeral services are Wednesday, October 12, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Louis Pearce officiating. Interment will be in Hawhammock Baptist Church Cemetery.

  • Too few flights from New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina forced seafood wholesalers to use other means, mainly trucking, to transport goods out of state. But shipping by air is making a comeback. Airlines that increased air service out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport report a resurgence of cargo shipping. But Harlon Pearce, owner of Harlon's LA Fish and chairman of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, said the slow return of flights forced the seafood and industry, the No. 1 cargo leaving New Orleans, to find new routes.
