CHESAPEAKE - , 88, entered into eternal rest Sept. 1, 2009. She was born in Edenton, N.C. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Clara Gilliam; her husband, Jerry M. Brown; and a son, John J. Brown. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are four daughters, Ruth Mill, Helen (Lonnie) Grant, Janice (Edward) Harrison, and Geraldine Bowens; three sisters, Essie Halsey, Daisy Givens and Martha Williams; one sister- in-law, Annie Brown; one brother-in-law, Benjamin Brown; 20 grandchildren; a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and a special friend.

Lou Donaldson has been around for decades and crafted a career that has gone from bebop to funk and back again. He's 83 years of age, tells humorous tales, cracks himself up, sings with a sly sense of pacing and plays his alto saxophone with a subtle clarity. If his instrument could talk, it would do so with perfect diction and a salty vocabulary. The roll-call of Donaldson's accompanists during his career is truly impressive. The organ lineups included such luminaries as John Patton, Charles Earland and Dr. Lonnie Smith, while drummers Art Taylor, Idris Muhammad and Bernard Purdie provided the pulse, as guitarists Grant Green, George Benson and Melvin Sparks picked and rolled around the rhythm.
CASSVILLE, Wis. - Two men were injured when the ultralight plane they were riding in crashed near Cassville Airport Monday morning, officials said. The pilot, Lonnie Averkamp, 54, of West Allis, was transported to Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster and later was transferred to a Milwaukee hospital with a back injury, the Grant County Sheriff's Department said. His condition was not released.
