You may have heard that NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recently released its outlook for the upcoming hurricane season. The organization believes there is a high probability for an above-average season. NOAA predicts the development of 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to 10 of them becoming hurricanes, and three to five of those reaching major hurricane strength. NOAA forecasters stress that they cannot predict how many hurricanes will make landfall or where.
This forecast may very well turn out to be right on target. In fact, given the skill and expertise of the scientists making the projections, I'd be surprised if the forecast wasn't at least pretty close. Still, long-term forecasts are tricky propositions. We need look back no further than exactly one ye...

I've recently written and talked about the National Weather Service's outlook for the winter season. While huge strides have been made in forecasting weather trends on a seasonal basis, it remains a very tricky proposition. Any forecast for more than about a week in advance should be viewed with a healthy degree of skepticism.
Exactly what these Weather Service outlooks indicate is often misunderstood and misreported. For example, you may have heard that the outlook for this winter in Milwaukee is for above-normal temperatures. That's not exactly accurate.

Toggling between local forecasts and weather reports from hundreds of miles away, officials warned Monday that Memphis faces dangerous flood threats on two fronts: the highest stages on the Mississippi River since 1937 and flash flooding along local streams.
The National Weather Service placed the area under a long-term flood warning amid forecasts for the Mississippi to reach 45 feet on the Memphis gauge - 11 feet above flood stage - by May 10. At that level, it will begin lapping onto Tom Lee Park during the Memphis in May International Festival and spread into a vast inland sea a dozen or more miles wide in some places.

California's mountains from south to north may be capped with beautiful white snow, but so far it's looking like the state will face its third dry year in a row.
The results of the state's first measurement of snow pack this season are an improvement over last year, officials said last weed. However, they don't promise enough water to secure water supplies and neither do long-term weather forecasts.

It isn't the kind of global warming experienced at the end of the last Ice Age, but Utah should have slightly elevated temperatures this summer.
At the Climate Prediction Center, Camp Springs, Md., National Weather Service scientists run computer models twice daily on long- term forecasts.

I'd be the first to tell you that there is a high degree of difficulty in making long-term weather forecasts.
When discussing monthly or seasonal outlooks, it's all but impossible to be specific. That said, there have been advancements in identifying long-term trends that can give us an idea whether temperatures and precipitation might average above or below normal.
