David Lerner, the owner and founder of Syosset-based David Lerner Associates, left teaching to become "Poppy," a friendly voice promoting his investment firm heard on AM radio. Recently, though, Lerner has found himself in hot water with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, who in May filed a complaint against him. And, Lerner's had to pay the authority $500,000 in fines to settle previous complaints. Despite those troubles, Lerner took the time to speak with us about the regulator's claims and his rise to fame as "Poppy.

A slew of Long Island-based financial advisers and other professionals face charges of varying degrees and accompanied with different fines from their federal regulator.
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, commonly known as FINRA, lodged a complaint against Paul Leon White of Huntington because he sold unsuitable securities to a non-profit organization. He recommended his nonprofit client invest in non-listed real estate investment trusts and other land deals without making sure that they were okay for the organization, according to a FINRA document.
