As if it were not enough, the heat wave chose to strike in the most relaxed month in France, August, the classic summer holiday season. Doctors, medical staff, and government personnel were on vacation. There was also an alarming sense of miscommunication between the general practitioners and hospital doctors in France and misperceptions by the public on their roles in the system. During the holiday month, families and relatives left behind their elderly, leaving the seniors unattended. If they fall ill, many are...

  • Of course it was hot, but as Dr. Helen Morrow says, "This is Memphis. Morrow, the acting health officer for the Health Department, is among Memphians who felt this summer was nowhere near as bad as the record-setting one in 1980.

  • With drought being declared in more and more places each summer, the issue of water conservation is especially pressing. Reducing strain on overtaxed water supplies and coping with water restrictions are beginning to look like annual problems. The EPA describes a two-pronged approach to conserving water, comprised of both engineering changes and behavioral changes. Engineering changes, which alter the plumbing or fixtures of the house, have a higher initial overhead, making them a little slower to be adopted, but can make a significant difference to a home's overall water use.

Answer: All you Don Johnson fans -- I know you're out there -- will be pleased to know that he did, indeed, star in that 1985 TV- movie remake, opposite Cybill Shepherd. Also in the cast were Ava Gardner, Jason Robards and Judith Ivey. It isn't on DVD.

  • C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty took a lot of heat last year for his summer youth-employment program, which had problems with mismanagement, contracts and technology training. The program also had a budget overrun of $30 million. Nearly 24,000 youths have registered for this year, and opportunities include working in the White House, the mayor said at a May 1 news conference. The program is scheduled to begin June 18 and end Aug. 21. Full-time and part-time jobs are available.
