Bloomer - For all the traveling I do, I still pick up souvenirs from time to time. I like logo golf balls from the courses I play. My "Simplify, Simplify" T-shirt from Walden Pond is a favorite, and you would have to go a long way to top the souvenir ruler with an embedded straw of bull semen I picked up years ago at World Dairy Expo.
The other day, though, I picked up a souvenir that carries with it not mere memory but daunting challenge. In addition to the $1 "Jump Rope Capital of the World" bumper sticker and the $3 "Jump Rope Capital" pizza slicer (talk about an impulse buy) I bought at the Bloomer Chamber of Commerce, I dropped another buck on an official jump rope made by Bloomer Rope Jump Inc., a "7 1/2 ft. durable free swinging rope with unbreakable vinyl handles - used by the C...

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A routine inspection of the gypsum pond at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kingston Fossil Plant on Wednesday discovered clear water seeping from a single area on the side of the facility. Maintenance work is underway to stop the seepage. Gypsum is a limestone product resulting from pollution-control processes. The seepage poses no hazard. However, as a precaution, TVA is testing the water and has notified the Environmental Protection Agency and state regulatory agencies. The seepage did not occur in a part of the pond where gypsum is stored. The inspection was part of TVA's program to regularly examine its ash and gypsum facilities. Reporters who wish to view the site Thursday may call TVA Media Relations at the number listed ...

Still to be seen by the Vermont public, too, is Clear's 20-foot-high steeland-copper installation for Fletcher Allen Health Care. "The Fabric of Life" will be riveted to a wall in the high-ceilinged entry of the new wing later this month. The sculpture consists of a tall triangular drape of "quilted" metal, each section a different color, with a steel facsimile of an old-fashioned sewing machine at the top. To Clear, it represents "comfort, warmth and connections" despite its cold, hard materials. Right now the piece is, well, in pieces, arranged on the pave- ment outside the studio; Clear accompanied an aerial photographer in a small plane earlier this week to shoot it from above. "My main focus is on getting this thing out the door and to the hospital," she says. "Then I can focus on ...

Still, while councilors shun naming-rights overkill -- "We don't want to turn our parks into a NASCAR, with billboards at every turn," says Council President Rich Fitzgerald -- it's hard to find one who'll call naming rights a bad bet. "I think in theory it's a great idea," says [Rich Nerone].
Start with long-hanging fruit," he says. [Vince Gastgeb] notes that the Pittsburgh Penguins logo at center ice at the South Park rink represents $10,000 in revenue -- a "baby program" that could easily mature. "Why couldn't we expand that to twenty thousand and rename that rink Pittsburgh Penguin Pond?
"I don't know why that's so intrusive to people," he says. "I just think it's how tastefully we do it."
