  • The two-a-days in college were a little more physically grueling than training camp practices. The good thing about the NFL is the coaches know when to push and when to back off, and I think rookies will be pleasantly surprised by that. But I don't want to downplay it: Practices are demanding, and it's more tough mentally in the pros. Everybody is good. The playbook is thick, and if you're not in your book, it's going to be obvious.

  • Then, two seasons ago, University of Miami linebackers Jonathan Vilma (Jets) and D.J. Williams (Broncos) had outstanding rookie seasons, which proved linebackers could indeed develop while we-and they-were young. Last year, more high-round rookie linebackers proved they belonged, as San Diego's Shawne Merriman, Seattle's Lofa Tatupu, Cincinnati's Odell Thurman, Kansas City's Derrick Johnson, Dallas' DeMarcus Ware and Miami's Channing Crowder made big impacts.

  • Already dealing with key injuries, the Seattle Seahawks took another hit on Sunday, losing middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu for the season with a torn left pectoral muscle. Seattle coach Jim Mora announced Tatupu would miss the rest of the season and need surgery following Seattle's 27-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Tatupu, a three-time Pro Bowler, appeared to get hurt while tackling Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald late in the second quarter. Tatupu walked off holding his left chest area and with his left arm appearing limp.

  • BOSTON - Three NFL players announced Monday they will donate their brains and spinal cord tissue to a Boston University medical school program that studies sports brain injuries. Even though dozens of former NFL players have agreed to donate their brains after death, center Matt Birk of the Baltimore Ravens, linebacker Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks and receiver Sean Morey of the Arizona Cardinals are the first active players to do so.

  • Rookie MLB Lofa Tatupu started the season opener. It's asking a lot of a rookie to make the defensive calls. The coaches, though, are enamored with his instincts and playmaking ability. Tatupu rarely takes a false step. At 5-11,226, he is undersized, however, and it's questionable whether he can take big, physical guards with regularity. • PHILADELPHIA -- Mike Holmgren confronted his defense last week. They definitely got the message, making a cross-country trip to Philadelphia for a Monday night game in the snow nothing more than a romp through the Linc. Using big plays on defense, including interception returns for touchdowns by Andre Dyson and rookie Lofa Tatupu, and smaller ones from their top-ranked offense, the Seattle Seahawks routed the Eagles 42-0.

  • KIRKLAND -- After getting credit for a half sack against San Francisco last month, Lofa Tatupu's conscience started bothering him. He kept thinking how he essentially just ran in while fellow Seahawks rookie linebacker Leroy Hill manhandled two 49ers blockers and then joined him to tackle quarterback Ken Dorsey.

  • Seven former University of Maine football players will be on NFL team rosters for the 2009 season's kickoff this weekend. The list includes defensive lineman Mike DeVito and tight end Matthew Mulligan, both on the New York Jets; linebacker Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs; running back Montell Owens of the Jacksonville Jaguars; linebacker Stephen Cooper of the San Diego Chargers; defensive back Brandon McGowan of the New England Patriots, and linebacker Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks.
