Leslie Goodrich, 50, is the woman everyone calls "the instigator" of the calendar, though she doesn't appear in it. A speech pathologist in local public schools, she wasn't sure it would be appropriate. And her husband, she notes with a meaningful look that needs no explanation, "works for the federal government." Goodrich recalls that the library committee was tossing around ideas for a really effective fundraiser that would "reach out beyond the community." Police also allege that a minor, working undercover for the police, was served alcohol.

Cheers: To a pilot program to allow beer and wine tasting at local farmers markets. Washington farmers are leaders in production of high-quality wine grapes and hops (a key ingredient in beer) and the state is rightfully proud of its fine wines and microbrews, many of which are produced by entrepreneurs who make most of their sales directly to consumers. It only makes sense for the state to allow these would-be customers to try before they buy. The pilot program, approved by the Legislature and Gov. Chris Gregoire, has some important safeguards in it, including limiting the size and quantity of the samples. For those who argue alcohol consumption doesnt belong at farmers markets, contrast that with the ubiquitous beer and wine garden found at many other community events where much more ...
