EDGEWATER -- The borough's former tax assessor played favorites when he gave one developer nearly half a million dollars in tax breaks, the Office of the State Comptroller said Tuesday.
Arthur Carlson, the assessor, lowered the tax assessment of developer Edgewater Promenade 123's unsold units at the Peninsula, a luxury condominium complex at City Place, according to an OSC report. The reductions saved the developer more than $472,500 - about triple the savings granted to other homeowners in the same building - during 2008-09, the audit found.

Andrew H. Schwenk, a retired property tax assessor for the Town of Cheektowaga, died Monday in Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo. He was 86.

The local tax assessor is suing to keep his job. Peter Cook filed a lawsuit Friday in York County Superior Court in Alfred claiming town officials are illegally trying to fire him.
In the court complaint against the town manager and councilors, attorney Howard Reben of Portland says that certified assessors such as Cook are protected from indiscriminate dismissal under state law.

EDGEWATER -- The borough tax assessor resigned this week after members of the Borough Council decided they did not want to tenure a part-time employee, a councilwoman said Friday.
The reappointment of Arthur Carlson to a second four-year term would have automatically granted him additional job protections under state law. Carlson's term ended Thursday.
