  • DEAR BRUCE: My wife and I own our house (no mortgage). We are concerned about the current and future costs of electricity. We are wondering if it is worth it to get a home loan to install solar panels and a solar-water heater for about $45,000 for a 5-kilowatt system tied into the grid. We have read the government is giving incentives of about $20,000-plus in tax credits, and our local energy company is giving $500. If this is true the home-equity loan would still be for about $20,000-plus. We cannot figure out whether the loan payment will be justified in place of a decreased electric bill. Our monthly electric runs from $250 to $385, depending on the time of year. Because we live on fixed incomes, it's hard to justify a loan. H.
