A number of companies have introduced fourth generation digital PBX systems. Such systems integrate the functions of digital PBXs and local area networks. A diagram shows the network configuration of Ztel's Private Network Exchange (PNX). A second diagram shows how CXC has integrated both broadband and baseband local area network technologies into its Rose digital PBX. A third shows InteCom Inc.'s Integrated Business Exchange (IBX). A fourth shows the modular design of Anderson Jacobson Inc.'s Integrated Office Exchange which expands from 100 to 24,000 ports. A fifth illustrates Telenova's integrated voice-data system, TeleNova 1, for the small business.

Satellite and local area networks each have their own protocols and polling methods. Multidrop protocols used for local networks, such as the SAbus protocol, are based on statistical multiplexing using centralized polling. This type of polling system uses dynamic, rather than fixed, assignment of the capacity of the transmission line or shared medium. Theoretically, a workable approach to providing a satellite network protocol would be a slotted Aloha protocol technique. This is due to the delays in transmission which occur with satellite networks, as well as the fact that not all earth stations have an uplink facility. Diagrams of possible local area network configurations are included, along with a block diagram of a local area network.

The Colonial Penn Group is one of the Nation's biggest personal line insurers. The Private Local Area Network (PLANET) was chosen by the company. The network permits the use of low-cost, easy-to-implement transmission lines. Flow controls are not complex and are reliable. The network easily expands and provides for an open network. A diagram illustrates the company's wideband, multiplexed network between its Philadelphia headquarters and its facility in Tampa, Florida. A second diagram illustrates an office floor's local area network (LAN) ring. Three other diagrams show the four major components in the LAN: the terminal access points, a cable access point, the Director processor and the central-site device.

The payment card industry is a typical "two-sided market" where two groups of agents (i.e. merchants and cardholders) interact with each other via a common network platform (i.e. a card network) and the value of participating in the network for agents in one group depends on the number of participants from the other group. The positive network externalities across the two sides create the "chicken-and-egg problem": without sufficient merchants accepting a particular card network, few consumers are willing to apply for the card; without sufficient cardholders, few merchants are willing to accept the card. While economists have addressed the issue from social welfare perspective, we focus on business strategy implications. Modeling network externalities in dynamic systems, we show that ne...

Additionally, by undermining the dualism between nature and culture, non-centered ecopolitics risks erasing the crucial distinction that makes environmental philosophy specificaUy "environmental." [...] one of the most important theoretical problems confronting ecopoUtical philosophy today is not that it lacks the proper conceptual tools for critiquing the various mechanisms and dualisms of environmental devastation but that it has neglected the more constructive task of developing a theoretical alternative to them.

This article describes a collaborative approach initiated by the Monfort Institute at the University of Northern Colorado to engage high-level practitioners of performance excellence and academic researchers to: a) identify the external and internal dilemmas facing practitioners in high-performing organizations; b) develop a purposeful research agenda that addresses both the needs and interests of practitioners and researchers; and c) develop a concept of operations to address the research agenda. High-performing organizations face many external pressures from customers, investors, suppliers and partners, and the public. In addition, they face internal challenges including leadership and work force turnover, cultural challenges, and limited understanding of the continuous refinement and...
