My desktop computer has a 27-inch monitor and every day I bask in its glow. Every time I upgraded to a larger screen, I remember thinking that I could never go back to the smaller one, how wonderful all this new desktop real estate was and how much easier my daily tasks were becoming. So now you know how I feel when I have to use a laptop with a 15-inch screen. But there may be some relief in sight.
A clever little piece of software called MaxiVista ($39.95) lets you turn any portable PC into a second monitor for your primary computer and it does this without adding any additional hardware. The connection can be made using an ordinary local area network connection that supports the TCP/IP protocol such as an Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Firewire or a USB network connection. A direct connecti...

Jones: The Internet has reached its TV days
It's hard to believe, but just 12 years ago most people had never heard of the Internet-- even as people were busily planning the foundations of a Local Area Network, or LAN, and an Internet connection for that LAN at my college.

Only a few years ago, you could predict that most-if not all-of the users and contributors to a project would be employees of a particular company and that those employees would be connected via a high-speed local area network. Today, everything is different-due to modern work habits, the economic downturn, and the increased use of outsourced service providers to manage and contribute broadly to projects. For example, more knowledge workers, artists, and even project managers work from home and need the same functionality over their broadband connection as they used to enjoy on the business local area network (LAN). The value of digital assets has always been great, but with today's increased emphasis on outsourcing and offshoring, selfservice content delivery to customers and licensees...

Use of wide area networks at the 1993 US Olympic Festival
Network management for the 1993 US Olympic Festival held in San Antonio, TX, was a daunting undertaking, involving coordination of the wide area network (WAN) connection of three primary network groups in two locations and five secondary local area networks (LAN) at five Olympic village sites. Additional dial-up microcomputers fed into the LANs from 25 other locations. Network integrators used Bendata Management's Heat database storage program to create and store massive amounts of data on Olympic athletes and volunteers. Novell Inc's NetWare 3.11 was chosen as the network operating system. Computer-savvy volunteers staffed the help desks and on their own initiative went so far as to call other festival venues to ensure that com...
