March 15 is a birthdate that saxophonist, flutist, and composer Charles Lloyd shares with a number of important musicians -- Lightnin' Hopkins, Cecil Taylor, Ry Cooder, and Sly Stone. Growing up, the swing-to-bop sounds of Charlie "Yardbird" Parker, Billie "Lady Day" Holiday, and Lester Young (dubbed "the President" or, simply, "Prez") fired Lloyd's musical imagination. His first important musical association was with drummer Chico Hamilton, whose group he joined in 1961; eventually he became the group's musical director. He also played with Cannonball Adderley, but it was the combo he led in the mid-1960s, which included a young Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette, that brought Lloyd international fame.

YAKIMA - of Brownstown (West Wapato area) passed away on Friday, August 5, 2005 at the age of 76, while recovering from heart surgery. Bob was surrounded by loving family and friends at the end. He was born June 23, 1929 to Charles F. and Julia M. (McAuliffe) Brown in Yakima, WA.
A Wapato High School graduate, Bob ranched and farmed near Brownstown for nearly 50 years. In retirement, he spent his time tending his flower gardens, delivering many a bouquet to friends and family along the way. Enjoying good food and company, Bob was a gracious host and a fine cook. Many an evening was spent after dinner playing cards with his guests.
