Litigation support work is a challenging and rewarding area of work, where you know you are helping a client solve a real problem, and not just fulfilling a regulatory obligation. Litigation support practitioners are often engaged as either an expert or as a consultant. As an expert, you have special knowledge that members of the court do not have. Therefore, your job is to educate the court. You are to be objective, and your opinion of the specific issues cannot be a function of who is paying your fee. If engaged as a consultant, you might be asked to assist in developing strategies, pinpointing significant issues, fact-finding, or recommending when other experts are needed or might be helpful.

Accounting Ronald D. Rudich, director of business valuation and litigation support services at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, of Owings Mills, has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of governors of the Institute of Business Appraisers. Rudich is a CPA, accredited in business valuation and certified in financial forensics. He is a certified business appraiser, a business valuator accredited for litigation, a certified valuation analyst, a certified machinery and equipment appraiser, a senior business analyst, and a certified merger & acquisition advisor. He also is accredited in business appraisal review.
ACCOUNTING Allen F. Haar, a principal at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, has joined the firm's accounting and auditing department. Since 2006, he has been a member of Gross Mendelsohn's litigation support and forensic services group. Haar will continue to provide litigation support services to the firm's clients.
Bryan Cave announced that St. Louis Litigation Counsel Joy L. Holley has been promoted to director of eDiscovery services and litigation support. In her new role, Holley will lead an internal consulting organization that provides eDiscovery services and litigation technology support for the firm's lawyers and clients.
Whenever a corporate client and its accounting firm decide to part ways, "it is generally not a surprise," says [Ira Rosenbloom], partner and co-director of the accounting and advisory group at J.H. Cohn in Roseland. "If we find it difficult to satisfy a client, we would probably shy out upfront. Expanded offerings include business consulting, forensic and litigation support services, and personal financial planning for business owners and highnet-worth individuals, he says. To stress the need to protect a client's confidentiality the manual instructs employees to "avoid talk about client matters in elevators, restaurants or other public places," and warns against leaving client-related papers unattended or in a car, "even for brief periods."
ACCOUNTING Reznick Group announced the expansion of its litigation support services practice with the addition of Senior Manager Dan Dreibelbis. Dreibelbis brings 28 years of experience in forensic accounting and fraud investigation to the firm. He was a former special agent for the FBI.
