[Suzi Quatro] and, by extension, the members of the Runaways- guitarist and principal songwriter Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), troubled singer Chérie Currie (Dakota Fanning), drummer Sandy West (Stella Maeve), lead guitarist Lita Ford (Scout Taylor- Compton), and, in the film, a fictional composite bassist dubbed Robin (Alia Shawcat)- are wild ones. Director Floria Sigismondi's screenplay hews the story down to the marrow, focusing almost entirely on Jett, Currie, and Currie's sister Marie (Riley Keough), with [Kim Fowley] as the creepily prescient force that introduced Jett to West outside Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco one fateful night on the Sunset Strip. There is a fine story to be told here, about how the cynical music-business impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) assembled the teenage members of the Runaways, including singer Chérie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and guitarist Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton), then crassly exploited them as jailbait. The problem is that [Floria Sigismondi], who based the screenplay on Currie 's young-adult memoir Neon Angel, never gets a handle on the film's tone. There are sweet, subtle insights about [Joan Jett] and Currie, their ambitions and frailties, their friendship and tentative romance.
