Pomplamoose -- It's extremely likely that you know these guys, though it's extremely unlikely that you recognize the name. You know those obnoxious Hyundai commercials they show every 10 seconds with the young musical duet singing Christmas songs? Well, that's Pomplamoose. One of the super-cool things about Pomplamoose -- which consists of Nataly Dawn and Jack Conte -- is they are a poster child for net neutrality. They don't have a record contract. They aren't starting their own label. What they have is talent and a sense of humor -- enough to garner them millions of views on Youtube.com and downloads on iTunes, which translated into a Hyundai commerical. The music is great, too. Conte seems to be able to play, to some extent, any instrument he attempts, while Dawn's voice is sexy and ...
Among Steve Jobs' incredible trove of achievements was his corralling in of the online digital music market. He devised a pay- model solution that was palatable both to a largely youthful audience accustomed to downloading tunes illegally in the face of unreasonably high prices and to music companies where inflated record and CD costs had long been music to their ears. ITunes showed that 99 cents and a quick and easy payment system was the sweet spot that enticed legal downloads and kept the cash flowing for artists and record companies.
Songs and More Songs," by Tom Lehrer -- In the annals of song humorists, there are a few standouts. You have "Weird" Al Yankovic, you have Allan Sherman and you have the music of comedian Adam Sandler. And you have Tom Lehrer. Lehrer is something of an enigma -- comedians, and musical comedians in particular, tend to be smart. But Leher is Smart, with a capital S. He began writing humorous music as a graduate student studying mathematics at Harvard. He was, for many years, a mathematics professor, at Harvard, MIT and Wellesley.
Launder your best green shirt and stretch your pint-lifting muscles, because St. Patrick's Day is almost upon us. In southern Maine, the festivities start today in Bath, where Blarney Days serves up a full plate of activities through March 17. On Sunday, Portland's annual St. Patrick's Day parade takes over Commercial Street. And on Tuesday, the Irish folk-rock sensation The Saw Doctors rolls into town to perform at Port City Music Hall.
Modest Mouse, "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank" -- The most commercial of all Modest Mouse's albums, "We Were Dead" is also the only Modest Mouse EP to feature Johnny Marr, former guitarist for British punk band The Smiths. The sound, as one would expect, follows suit. There is depth and musical context in much of the album that wasn't as present in previous releases and, though much is lost in the way of the "traditional" punk sound, there are gains, too. Take, for example, "Dramamine," from the band's first full- length album, "This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About." There is, as in later songs, the marching drumbeat the band seems to favor. The song and its mates on the album do move punk further down its natural progression while staying true to the gru...
Collectively, the beach bars are one of the reasons Atlantic City's beaches were named among the country's top 10 best "action beaches" by Travelocity.com (go to http://dest.travelocity.com/Tips, then click on the "Holiday & Seasonal Travel" link). Go ahead and order your favorite beverage and maybe some munchies. Surely the folks at Travelocity know what they're talking about, but in this case, it's better to play beach bum and form your own opinion. This beach bar is more secluded than the rest -- if for no other reason than its lack of other beach bar neighbors (the three others are in close proximity to one another). It's also the only beach bar located on the inside of the dunes, making it far more visible from the Boardwalk than the others. The Hilton Beach Bar is offered as t...
The Coasters, "16 Greatest Hits:" There's this scene in Quentin Tarantino's film "Death Proof" in which Butterfly is convinced to give a psychopath a lap dance. She chooses The Coasters' song "Down in Mexico," and it is something to see -- in part because Vanessa Ferlito (as Butterfly) knows what she is doing. Ferlito is not a classic beauty. She has a quirky look about her, but The Coasters make it work. On "16 Greatest Hits" you get the very best of The Coasters, and though the original vinyl release may be a bit hard to come by, the newer CD releases of the group's work are decent compilations as well. Older listeners will remember The Coasters, and be compelled to sing along. Younger listeners, though, should not turn a deaf ear just because it has that old-timey sound. In addition ...
A new cutting-edge social networking feature is propelling a local mobile music company into the international spotlight, business leaders said this week. TuneWiki opened its first offices in Bellbrook in January 2008 and moved to its Centerville location at 4 W. Franklin St. in 2010. The company also opened an office in Tel Aviv, Israel, in mid-2009, and in Los Angeles -- the site of its business headquarters -- in January 2010.
