  • This qualitative study, based on a series of 30 in-depth interviews and 109 economic surveys conducted with active heroin users residing in and around Detroit, Michigan, describes reported patterns of heroin use and income generation activities. In spite of lack of access to regular, legal employment, we found that many participants displayed a dedication to regular daily routine and a sense of risk management or control. These findings are discussed relative to past research on heroin addiction as well as recent research on the changing nature of employment. We argue that this sample fits somewhere in between the controlled or working addict, and the "junkie" or "righteous dope fiend" of urban lore. Sure enough, we may be witnessing a sea change in tobacco policy with the introduction of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Many commentators from both sides of the debate, however, have decried the Act: It either bloodies the hands of the Food and Drug Administration by making it complicit in the distribution of the world’s deadliest consumer good, or it marks the anti-tobacco movement’s furthest intrusion into free markets and free speech yet. This Note charts a middle course, alternatively praising and criti...

  • [...] the purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the perceptions of college students toward light cigarettes compared to regular cigarettes and ultra-light cigarettes compared to light cigarettes to assess whether students perceive these cigarettes as safer and whether their perceptions differ based on their smoking status (nonsmoker, former smoker, social smoker, or regular smoker).
