Mark L. Feldhousen, a suspended Niagara Falls policeman, apparently lost his job and his right to lifetime city-paid medical insurance after he was found guilty Tuesday of assaulting his girlfriend in her home Nov. 12. After four hours of deliberation, a Niagara County Court jury of ruled Feldhousen, 59, was guilty of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, but not guilty of second-degree assault, a felony.
AUBURN -- Behind-the-scenes personnel who work for Androscoggin County -- clerks, maintenance workers and other unelected, nonunion personnel -- may be entitled to lifetime health care benefits. But they need to have been hired before 2005 and serve a minimum of eight consecutive years in those jobs, the three-member County Commission decided Wednesday.
AUBURN -- A three-member panel delayed a decision Wednesday on whether to honor a decades-old agreement to pay lifetime health- care benefits to former elected officials. The Androscoggin County Commission has already pulled funding for the practice -- totalling $71,000 -- from its proposed 2011 budget.
AUBURN -- County leaders plan to pick up the issue of lifetime health care coverage for former elected officials next week in an afternoon workshop. The three-member Androscoggin County Commission has scheduled a discussion of the benefit for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17. The issue could also come up at a formal meeting of the commission scheduled for 5 p.m.
Police officers and firefighters are asking for lifetime health care coverage from the state when they retire. The proposed benefit, one that also would cover some current retirees, has the support of Gov. John Baldacci and Democratic leaders in the Maine Legislature, which is likely to take up the measure this session.
Hempfield taxpayers will pay for health insurance for 11 former officials and employees for the rest of their lives because of a state Supreme Court ruling. The decision stems from a December ruling in the case of White Deer Township in Union County, which sued former supervisors and their spouses to prevent them from receiving health care benefits after they left office.
