  • Recently I was asked if some software applications I was involved in were Web 2.0 compliant. This was amusing and distressing on so many levels. It's ...

  • Now, the best solution: Get out of the frame! And get out as soon as you can. This may entail the library having to provide its own servers and content management software, but it's well worth it. Library Web sites are some of the most complicated and information-rich sites out there. To jam, crush, and smash them inside someone else's construct complicates matters horribly and often creates an unusable and confusing site. We're librarians. Many libraries are part of larger organizations-universities, cities, counties, hospitals. This can be beneficial for the libraries in terms of political, financial, or even technical support, but when part of a larger organization can easily become a nightmare for the Webmaster. Here, Houghton provides some design and institutional strategies for su...

  • Learn that some librarians still "lift and carry books, and some climb ladders to reach high stacks," but take heart because they also "use the latest information technology to perform research, classify materials, and help students and library patrons seek information." Library Spot http://www.libraryspot.com/ LibrarySpot.com is a "free virtual library resource center for educators and students, librarians and their patrons, families, businesses, and just about anyone exploring the Web for valuable research information." Strong School Libraries Help Students Learn http://www.oelma.org/advocacy/NLL06-Factsheet. pdf This is a two-page fact sheet created by Ohio's Leadership for School Libraries (aka L4SL) and can serve as an example of how to promote the value of library media centers.

  • RANGELEY -- While most are familiar with using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to search the Internet, the Rangeley Public Library has created a custom search engine that will allow anyone to search the Internet directly from the Rangeley Library Web page at www.rangeleylibrary.com. The custom search engine, called "Internet Quick Links," will search the vast number of Web sites that have been built into the search engine without giving information overload.

  • Experience has shown that it is best to let Liz upload and test plug-ins, as they can cause problems or conflicts with other plug-ins, but uploading themes can be actively encouraged. Since adding this feature, several new themes have been discovered, such as Atahualpa, which has rotating header images and more than 50 options for customization.

  • The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and its critics have one new thing to squabble about -- a Web address. Critic David Tessitor runs a Web site, carnegielibrary.us, critical of the Carnegie. The library wants it shut down, claiming Tessitor doesn't have the right to use 'Carnegie Library' in the domain name.

  • Another source of materials is the Web site of the Usability Research Lab of North Carolina State University's D. H. Hill Library. The lab's stated purpose is to "help interested faculty, students, and staff learn the benefits of a user-centered approach to design and to support usability." Its site offers a brief introduction to usability and a description of the lab's video, audio, and computer data-gathering capabilities. The card catalog has been replaced in libraries by the Web OPAC, which has more possibilities for cutomization and integration and for outside access to the catalog. While some libraries offer virtual reference services, many do not, so patrons accessing a site from home need to be able to successfully search the catalog without the assistance of a reference librari...

  • Do you suppose the Ellsworth Public Library has Muriel Sampson Johnson's "Early Families of Gouldsboro?" Indeed it does, and you don't have to call the library to find out. Go to the Web site at www.ellsworth.lib.me.us, and click on "Online Catalog." Enter any keywords you like and see what they have.
