The present paper subjects unions to a libertarian analysis and finds this organizational structure highly problematic from the perspective of the criminal law. Libertarianism is defined as that philosophy which opposes the initiation, or the threat thereof, of violence against non-aggressing people. Unions are characterized as groups which although need not in principle act contrary to this stricture, as a matter of fact always and ever do so. Hence, organized labor, as presently constituted, cannot be reconciled with libertarian principles of non-aggression. They are thus, in effect, criminal gangs and should be seen and treated as such.
Keynes's basic insight is that in recessions pessimistic consumers and businessmen hoard cash and refuse to spend no matter how low interest rates become, rendering monetary policy useless. Confronting an apparent liquidity trap, the Federal Reserve has taken Friedman's monetary critique to heart and lowered interest rates to zero over the past year. Furman's declaration in a 2008 Los Angeles Times article that the Keynesian view of stimulus is "standard textbook economics" displays a paradoxical combination of Friedman's libertarianism and Keynes's activist government philosophy.

In his Nov. 7 My View, "Tea party danger is real; be afraid," psychologist Robert Silver states that the adherents of the tea party "constitute an extreme element of the Republican Party." The actual case is that President Barack Obama's juggernaut of the implementation of Keynesian economics lit a fire under the heretofore dormant libertarian conscience of the American heartland. Libertarianism isn't just a Johnny-come-lately political philosophy but has been ingrained in the American psyche from the time of the American Revolution. The tea party happens to be the political expression of libertarianism, but to suggest that it is associated with the Republican Party is just a diversionary tactic to discredit it. If Republican incumbents don't shape up to libertarian standards in 2012, t...
This July 4, ask yourself how well you understand the principles upon which the nation was founded. Are you a rock-solid freedom lover, a closet authoritarian or an inyour-face socialist? Take the following Freedom Quiz and see. Editorial writers at a sister paper, The Orange County Register, developed these questions to highlight aspects of "small l" libertarianism, the "freedom philosophy" that animates our pages. We believe in limited government, respect for the individual, self-responsibility, free markets, free trade and property rights. So, take the challenge and find out your freedom IQ. Those who flunk it are advised to read The Gazette's editorial pages more thoroughly! A congressman said recently, "Government can be a force for good in your life." Do you:
A legend in the economics profession died recently at the age of 94. Few economists have had the impact that Milton Friedman has had on economics. He retired from the University of Chicago in 1977, a school on which he also had a profound impact. His influence was widely felt and remembered in macroeconomics, economic history, the philosophy of economics, policy circles, and libertarianism. Friedman had an important and lasting legacy on monetary economics. In what came to be seen as a frontal assault on Keynesian economics, Friedman developed the permanent income hypothesis in "The Theory of the Consumption Function." Instead of fiscal policy, Friedman argued that movements in the money supply were the most important determinants of economic activity. Friedman's advice on central banki...

BEFORE last week's South Carolina Republican debate, Ron Paul supporters complained that their candidate was not getting the first- tier attention his polling and fundraising should bring. It is true that Paul has often been overlooked and dismissed, as one might treat a slightly dotty uncle. But perhaps some first-tier scrutiny is deserved. Paul was the only candidate at the debate to make news, calling for the repeal of laws against prostitution, cocaine and heroin. The freedom to use drugs, he argued, is equivalent to the freedom of people to "practice their religion and say their prayers." Liberty must be defended "across the board." "It is amazing that we want freedom to pick our future in a spiritual way," he said, "but not when it comes to our personal habits.
