Performance measures have long been a topic of interest in higher education although no consensus on the best way to measure performance has been achieved. This paper examines the extent and effectiveness of service efforts and accomplishment reporting by public and not-for-profit U.S. colleges and universities using survey data provided by the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Effectiveness is evaluated using the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) suggested criteria. This study focused on school-level approaches to assessment and accountability policies and practices. A national random sample of 131 (34.22%) principals from juvenile correctional schools for committed youth (JC) responded to a mail and on-line survey. No statistically significant differences existed between respondent and nonrespondent schools. Results indicated that the majority of students with or without disabilities in JC schools participated in state assessments. The most common basis of school policies for assessment accommodations was state accommodation guidelines. For most JC schools there was no process for accountability for student participation and performance on state assessments. This study investigates the impact of coaching expertise on project management outcomes within Six Sigma programs. Survey data were collected from 140 Black Belts and 176 team members at six organizations. In this research, the relationships between the independent variables (project characteristics, coaching expertise, employee focus, years of experience, number of projects completed, education level, and number of projects in a team) and the dependent variables (project management outcomes) were tested using linear regression. This manuscript reports the results of a national survey examining levels of market orientation toward students and student/faculty ratios exhibited in AACSB member schools. We reword Narver and Slater's (1990) "market orientation" scale and Jaworski and Kohli's (1993) "overall performance" scale for use within the higher education context. We group respondents based on overall performance and report mean level of market orientation and mean student/faculty ratio for each of four levels of performance. Placing a monetary value on education is a complex task. A more difficult task is to determine at what monetary level individuals will support educational improvements. The contingent valuation method was used to estimate the value of the implementation of financial literacy education in Texas public schools. A Web-based survey was administered to 279 Texas Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members. Respondents reported being willing to pay additional property taxes for implementation of financial literacy education. Additional gambling venues and state sales tax proved to be acceptable revenue sources for added educational funding, whereas a state income tax proved to be the least preferred revenue source.
A negative correlation between education and fertility has been described with great regularity in modern societies. The present investigation examines the strength of this relationship with data from the 1990, 1995 and 2000 waves of the World Values Survey covering 78 countries with a combined sample size of up to 181,728 respondents. The negative correlation is present in nearly all countries, is stronger in females than males, is greater for educational level than for length of schooling, and is not mediated by personal wealth. It is strongest at relatively low levels of economic, social and cognitive development and becomes weaker in the most advanced societies. There is a perceived shortage of males in education provincially and nationally in Canada, particularly at the elementary level. My theoretical framework derives from queer theory, questioning the fluidity of discourse and identities, and troubling accepted, commonplace beliefs, knowledge, and practices. Adding grades seven and eight to El Dorado Elementary School received mixed reviews by a host of students leaving the crowded campus Monday afternoon after the final bell rang. While members of the El Dorado PTA survey parents on a proposal to extend the school's level of education to eighth grade, opinions among fifth and sixth graders appeared split: Some students said they would want to leave El Dorado immediately after sixth grade to attend junior high elsewhere. Other students said if given a choice they would want to stay until taking the big leap into high school.
WASHINGTON - Americans, who shocked pollsters in 1985 when they said they had only three close friends, today say they have just two. And the number who say they've no one to discuss important matters with has doubled to 1 in 4, according to a nationwide survey to be released today. The latest research found that men and women of every race, age and education level reported fewer intimate friends than the same survey turned up in 1985. Their remaining confidants were more likely to be members of their nuclear family than in 1985, according to the study, but intimacy within families was down, too. The findings are reported in the June issue of the American Sociological Review.
