  • Forced to choose between joining Canadas best synchronized ice- skating team in Burlington, Ontario or attending Canadas best university in Montreal, Cece Nease, 18, decided education comes first. But shes still pretty darn proud of making the team. I almost thought theyd exclude me for not having international experience, Nease said. Its a slow process for most girls who try out. They start on low-level teams, begin competing internationally on the junior team, and then move up to the senior team. But Nease had barely pulled her skates off when Team Canada 1, the best synchronized skating team in Canada and World Champions in 2009, said they wanted her on their senior team. This was a huge leap from her hometown team the West Virginia Synchro, the only synchronized skating team in the ...

  • Performance measures have long been a topic of interest in higher education although no consensus on the best way to measure performance has been achieved. This paper examines the extent and effectiveness of service efforts and accomplishment reporting by public and not-for-profit U.S. colleges and universities using survey data provided by the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Effectiveness is evaluated using the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) suggested criteria. Regression analysis suggests an association between the extent of disclosure and size, leverage, level of education provided, and regional accreditation agency. Private institutions rate themselves as more effective communicators. Effectiveness of communication is also associated w...

  • (EFE).- Immigration doesn't make workers bom in the US A earn less, but rather this group, regardless of education level, has enjoyed a modest pay increase as a result of the new immigration, according to a new study. Immigration and Wages, a research paper released Thursday by the Economic Policy Institute, concludes that over the long term, immigration has no overall impact on the average national wage. S.-born workers "typically do not compete head-to-head with immigrants for jobs," according to study, drafted by EPI economist Heidi Shierholz. Americans are right to worry about the declining quality of jobs over the last few decades, but this report shows that, for native workers at all levels of education, immigration had very little to do with it," Shierholz said.

  • The economic situation in the US has yet to brighten, with most outlooks not foreseeing the beginnings of a rebound until the early part of 2009. Jobless claims have spiked to a four-year high on the back of seven consecutive months of employment losses, while major employers across the country are looking to slash positions by the thousands. More than five decades ago, National Association of Credit Management (NACM) established a continuing education program for executives, well before universities and colleges launched their own themes. NACM's two-year Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management (GSCFM) paved the way for advanced-level executive education, built on the foundation of expertise and the desire to meet the ever-changing demands placed on financial professionals. • We are a nation of immigrants. Nearly every man, woman and child who has lived in the United States had ancestors who traveled thousands of miles to achieve what we now call the American Dream. It is our immigrants who have made our nation great, who built the foundation upon which America has risen to become the preeminent democratic and economic power on earth. And today we risk leaving immigrants behind. The demographics of our cities, and our entire country, are changing. The U.S. Census just announced that racial minorities made up roughly 85 percent of the nation's population growth over the last decade. In our congressional district, adult education schools - which provide ESL and civics education classes - are facing severe cuts in funding. And many of these schools already lack...
