This descriptive study examined the influence of demographic factors (age, gender, income, level of education, and religion) on consumers' attitudes to purchase American-made passenger vehicles in three Asian countries: 1) China, 2) Taiwan, and 3) Thailand. Since American-made vehicles still occupy only a small segment of this Asian market, the relationships and differences among the three countries in terms of their culture and country-of-origin effect on product attributes were measured - helping marketers increase market share by better understanding the determining factors leading to notable diversity in the consumers' decision-making process.

More veterans in West Virginia might be dealing with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder because the state is so rural, according to a doctor studying veterans' health.
Dr. Joseph Scotti told lawmakers Monday that most of the factors were expected, including longer travel to reach medical facilities, the level of health care available, and the veterans' level of education level, employment and income.

Charter schools may be part of creating a two-level system of education, where low-income students have one set of options, and wealthier families have more options," argues veteran Madison school board member Carol Carstensen. "It troubles me that we're pulling away from a common school experience, and some people are essentially saying, 'Traditional public schools may be good enough for those kids, but not for my kid.'
Given the Madison district's ambivalence toward charter schools, Studio School backers admit they're nervous. "I'm not feeling any acrimony or outward discomfort," says [Nancy Donahue], "but by the same token I'm not feeling the district is supportive, either."
"We're not angry, bitter people," says Donahue. "We're not hyper-activists. We're a small group of involved ...

RIDGEWOOD, N.J., Nov. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- More than 80 percent of American women flunked a recent skincare knowledge test. But perhaps more alarming, the overwhelming majority (88 percent) think they knew which skincare products to use for their skin type, according to a new national survey. This finding suggests that women should consult a skin care expert, such as a dermatologist or esthetician.
The survey, sponsored by the Society of Dermatology SkinCare Specialists (SDSS), asked U.S. women who use skincare products to answer a few simple questions about skincare, including identifying which types of ingredients they should be using to treat common skin concerns like dark spots, fine lines/wrinkles around the eyes or inflammation and bruising. Age, level of education and househo...

For parents intensely concerned about the performance of the schools, and for taxpayers wondering what is being bought by half of the county's operating budget, a limited and possibly warped yardstick is better than none at all.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the Maryland School Assessment, given to third- through eighth-grade students every spring, measures proficiency in two core subjects, reading and math. The standard for making Adequate Yearly Progress, as measured by these test results, goes up every year. And the evaluation regime requires not just across-the-board increases, but increases for every group of students as classified by race, family income level, English proficiency and need for special education.

Placing a monetary value on education is a complex task. A more difficult task is to determine at what monetary level individuals will support educational improvements. The contingent valuation method was used to estimate the value of the implementation of financial literacy education in Texas public schools. A Web-based survey was administered to 279 Texas Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members. Respondents reported being willing to pay additional property taxes for implementation of financial literacy education. Additional gambling venues and state sales tax proved to be acceptable revenue sources for added educational funding, whereas a state income tax proved to be the least preferred revenue source.

Almost every kind of odd and interesting information is on a map at your fingertips. Find out how many people in Connecticut live within 1,000 feet of a landfill, or see where coyotes have been spotted - and then look at how many coyote sightings are within 1,000 feet of a landfill. Or, in an area with a certain median income or level of education.
The possibilities are almost endless and many of them reveal surprising relationships.

According to the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute's October 2007 report, D.C.'s Two Economies: Many Residents Are Falling Behind Despite the City's Revitalization, the wage gap between D.C's highest earners (the top 20 percent) and the lowest (the bottom 20 percent) is the widest it has been since 1979. And the number of impoverished D.C. residents has grown. According to the Institute report, nearly 20 percent, or one in five District residents, have incomes below the poverty level. Since the late 1990s, about 27,000 D.C. residents have fallen into poverty.
According to the Institute report, the median income for White households in Washington grew from $55,000 in 1980 to $92,000 in 2006 (in 2006 dollars). The incomes of the least paid workers (when adjusted for inflation) have stayed prac...

Bangladesh is a Southeast Asian developing country that has been experiencing a constant GDP growth of over 5% for the last decade. This growing trend in the economy can largely be attributed to the massive growth in the private sector, among whose banking industry has been the largest. We study the behavior of active individual investors who hold foreign stocks and bonds directly. Using the Survey of Consumer Finances, we determine the demographic, financial, and behavioral characteristics that predict the likelihood of direct investments in foreign stocks and bonds. Our main findings are: (1) while aggregate data indicate substantial home bias, within the group of active individual investors in foreign stocks, there is no evidence of home bias, and (2) age, financial wealth, and proxies for investor confidence are positively related to direct ownership of foreign stocks and bonds, while proxies for lack of financial sophistication have a negative effect.
