REDLANDS - "Letters from Iwo Jima" has all the stylistic elements of a classic war film in the making. It is passionate, reflective, dark and gritty with a thematic content unique to the American war drama.
No other film in Hollywood's history imbeds itself so deeply and successfully in the enemy's camp.

A touching, heartfelt movie that outdoes Eastwood's previous work
In a year when America is in the midst of a vicious, unpopular war, Letters From Iwo Jima stands out as an important movie, one that is as good as it is informative. While discrimination remains a major issue throughout the world, Clint Eastwood managed to create a movie that puts differences between cultures aside and proves that even enemies have a lot in common.

A few nights ago, we watched Clint Eastwood's stirring film "Letters from Iwo Jima.
Seeing American and Japanese soldiers fight to the death, even in a re-creation, made think of a vial of black sand in our living room hutch. It was given to us by a veteran of that battle, and for a time we treasured it as a relic of history's most terrible war.

Winning a Golden Globe award is often a predictor of Academy Award success. This year, however, that won't be true of at least one category: best foreign language film.
Clint Eastwood took home that trophy Monday night for his Japanese-language "Letters From Iwo Jima." The American production won't even be on the shortlist when Oscar nominations are announced Tuesday: The academy requires foreign language films to be truly foreign.
