  • As a professor who teaches women's studies at The University of Kansas, Rep. Barbara Ballard can speak at length about the state's history of strong females. Kansas, as Ballard points out, was home to the world's first female dentist (Lucy Hobbs Taylor, who moved to Lawrence in 1867 and practiced for more than 40 years) and one of the United States' first female sheriffs (submachine gun-toting Mabel Chase, who served in Kiowa County from 1926 to 1928). Kansas also was one of the first states to allow women the right to vote (1861 in school elections, 1887 in municipal elections and 1912 in all elections).

  • Though an invasion of Iraq was being plotted as soon as the Bushites came to power nine months before 9/11, the day's effect on geopolitics was immediate and dramatic. A muddling president whose initial response to the attacks was confusion and flight was reinvented as the decisive leader of a righteous crusade against barbarism. The whole world became a theater of perpetual war between Civilization and its Discontents, the general populace not actors but audience. Americans became citizen-spectators of upheaval, in New York, Washington, Afghanistan, and Iraq, that seemed remarkably like a movie, because events arrived as sensational images packaged with martial music and cinematic titles such as "America Under Attack" and "America's New War." Observing planes smashing into buildings th...

  • Sawdust is flying as others measure and cut all around him, but Cody Perol hardly looks up as he works alone. One hand slides methodically and steadily as Cody sands away the blemishes from a boat's gunwale. Using his other hand, he gently feels for places he has missed. Cody squints, as if looking through a rifle sight, as he studies the length of the boat for high spots.

  • COMING CLOSELY on the heels of reports that the Government is in talks to sell its stake in the Sandals Resortbranded Whitehouse Westmoreland hotel to its partner in the venture, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, the authorities appear set to give the all-clear for an aerodrome to be operated by the businessman at Holland Bamboo, St Elizabeth. Aeronautical studies have been done by the JCAA to determine tbe length of the runway possible, what terrain constraints may or may not exist and the category aircraft that are likely to use the Holland aerodrome," corporate communications manager at the JCAA, Nicole Robinson, said in an email.

  • Ear buds. Earphones. Naked ears. How one listens to music does not matter in terms of potential hearing damage as much as the combination of volume, proximity to the noise source and length of exposure. This is common sense, yes. But when studies emerge like a recent one in the Journal of the American Medical Association that estimated one in five teenagers has hearing loss, the message of auditory moderation seems to bear repeating.

  • The relationship of post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) and recidivism has been widely studied with various, idiosyncratic results. A meta-analysis of ten years of existing studies was conducted to synthesize a portion of the past research. This study demonstrates, using relevant studies reported from 1990 - 1999, that there is a positive correlation (+.31) between PSCE and recidivism reduction. These results are statistically significant. Four subsets, or moderator analyses, were also positively related to recidivism reduction and statistically significant. These included (1) PSCE program completers versus completers and participants; (2) reincarceration only as the recidivism construct; (3) length of recidivism measure; and (4) studies using control groups to negate possible ...

  • HARRISBURG -- It's not surprising the Dauphin County jury charged with deciding the fate of ex-Rep. Mike Veon and three co-defendants is entering a sixth day of deliberations after a six-week trial, the director of the Center for Jury Studies said Thursday. There is a correlation between the length of trial and deliberation," said Paula Hannaford-Agor, director of the center, part of the National Center for State Courts in Williamsburg, Va. "I would not make the jump to say they are deadlocked.

  • Since the rediscovery of Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins (1859-1930), marked in part by Ann Allen Shockley's 1972 biographical essay and the Schomburg reprinting of her novels, there has been a virtual explosion in Hopkins scholarship, including a growing number of journal articles, significant attention in a number of book-length studies, and a 1996 collection of essays.
