Atlanta An experimental drug dramatically slowed tumor growth among certain patients with advanced-stage breast cancer, researchers reported Saturday, providing hope to women who don't respond to standard treatment options. This is really exciting," said Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, which was not involved in the study.
Dichloroacetate -- DCA -- is not the cure for cancer. But over the past week or so, the American Cancer Society has apparently been all but overrun with requests for information about DCA, a biochemical compound related to the acetic acid that gives vinegar its bite. According to Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deptuy chief medical officer for the agency, this mass interest was likely precipitated by a study published in the journal Cancer Cell last month showing that DCA could be used in laboratory rats to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It turns out that catching cancer early isn't always as important as we thought. Some tumors are too slow-growing to ever threaten your life. Some are so aggressive that finding them early doesn't make much difference. And today's treatments are much better for those somewhere in the middle.
