On Sept. 8, 1560, Amy Dudley, a young noblewoman, was found dead at the foot of the staircase of her country estate in Oxfordshire. Since her husband was Robert Dudley, the earl of Leicester and the favorite and, many would add, lover of Queen Elizabeth I, the rumormongers and court gossips were soon in a frenzy of lurid speculation. The death of Leicester's wife removed a previously insurmountable obstacle to any hope he entertained of marrying the queen. Hence, the burning question of the day was whether it was an accident, suicide or murder. And, as the burgeoning anti-Leicester faction asked, if it was a homicide, did the queen instigate it?
