Recently, I provided tips for working at home and had a flood of letters asking me about "legitimate" work-at-home jobs. When I write about working from home, I usually have in mind someone who either has a telecommute situation, is a freelancer or independent contractor, or runs his or her own business. That, alone, covers a wide range of options. People I know who work from a home office are writers, graphic artists, bookkeepers or accountants, plumbing or electrical contractors, real estate agents, travel agents and consultants (to name just a few!). Others operate independent retail businesses for such companies as Mary Kay, CAbi, Princess House and Private Quarters.

Legitimate businesses can be conducted from home, but consumers need all the information they can get to separate good opportunities from the not-so-good ones and the out-and-out scams. The Federal Trade Commission recently approved changes to its Business Opportunity Rule that will help consumers make an informed decision while also lessening the regulatory burden on companies that sell the programs.
