Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to add restrictions to an already limited proposal to mandate insurance coverage for treatment of autistic children, continuing the debate on a bill that had widespread support in the General Assembly. McDonnell announced proposed changes to the autism insurance legislation Wednesday, a day after his deadline for taking action on bills passed during the legislative session that ended Feb. 27. The governor vetoed three bills just before the deadline, including a measure that would gradually increase the state's cap on medical malpractice awards.
WASHINGTON, March 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- As a long-time champion of bringing relief to small businesses struggling with skyrocketing health care costs, Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) today praised Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee for unveiling Small Business Health Plan (SBHP) legislation that is scheduled to be marked-up this Wednesday. In February 2005, Senator Snowe, Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, introduced the Small Business Health Fairness Act (S. 406), which would allow small businesses to pool together, through SBHPs, to offer uniform health insurance at lower costs. SBHPs are also known as "Association Health Plans. I applaud Senator Enzi for his continuing commitment to...
The Safety in Youth Sports Act passed this week by the state House was both "unnecessary" and merely "feel-good" legislation, PIAA executive director Brad Cashman said Wednesday. The bill, passed 169-29, was designed to better protect middle and high school athletes from serious brain trauma.

S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner introduced legislation Wednesday that would speed up the timetable for natural gas and oil exploration off Virginia's coast and expand the state's share of offshore territory. // The bill also would require that half of future government revenues from offshore drilling be allocated directly to the state government or spent by federal officials on conservation efforts, transportation improvements and alternative energy projects in Virginia. The two Democrats' proposal goes further in seeking a larger share for Virginia from offshore resources than a House measure co- sponsored by two Hampton Roads congressmen. However, the plan will face strong opposition from other federal lawmakers who oppose sharing federal oil and gas revenues with select states an...

WASHINGTON - The Senate rejected legislation Wednesday that would have halted pending federal regulations to limit the debit card swipe fees that financial institutions charge retailers. The 54-45 vote, which did not split along typical partisan lines, pitted banks against merchants, two industries that lawmakers hate to cross because of their influence back home and their campaign contributions.
The House of Delegates unanimously passed legislation Wednesday to close a loophole in Virginia's workers' compensation law that denies benefits to some brain-injured workers. House Bill 1475, sponsored by Roanoke Democrat Onzlee Ware, would help workers injured in unwitnessed accidents who are unable to recall the circumstances of the incident. The bill now goes to the Senate, which has yet to take up a similar measure (Senate Bill 823) sponsored by Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke. Edwards said he will amend his bill to match Ware's.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation Wednesday that would increase U.S. support for Iranian dissidents and impose new sanctions on companies that aid the ruling regime. The Iran Human Rights and Democracy Promotion Act is co- sponsored by Sens. Mark Kirk, Illinois Republican, and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, New York Democrat, and Reps. Robert J. Dold, Illinois Republican, and Theodore E. Deutch, Florida Democrat.
