A Legal Services of Eastern Missouri's ceremony took a turn for the poignant Tuesday night when the agency gave two awards that marked the sudden death of a volunteer earlier this year.
Legal Services honored a total of 12 people and organizations with "For the Common Good" awards at the event in the downtown Westin St. Louis. The agency provides legal aid to low-income people in 21 counties in eastern Missouri.

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri's Jason Dodson has been appointed to the 2012 Child Support Guidelines Advisory Group by the Supreme Court of Missouri's Family Court Committee.
This group, which consists of judges, family court commissioners and a few attorneys from throughout the state, will be collecting and analyzing testimony from Missouri residents to help develop new child support guidelines.

Shannon Dodson, a volunteer for Legal Services of Eastern Missouri's Justice for All Ball, died last week.
Dodson, 34, was married to Jason D. Dodson, LSEM staff attorney, and was co-chair of the ball's auction this year. In an e-mail sent to the auction committee, Judy Miniace, LSEM's director of development, said Dodson "died unexpectedly during her stay at a hospital" on Thursday.

After 30 years of serving the poor and underprivileged, Ann B. Lever is retiring from Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.
Lever began working for LSEM while still in law school and was hired in 1979 when she graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law. In April 1985, Richard B. Teitelman, then LSEM's executive director, promoted Lever to the position of director of legal education.
