The Pennsylvania Bar Association Committee on Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility issued an opinion last week on the ethical obligations of maintaining a virtual law office in the state. In Opinion 2010-200, the Committee concluded that virtual law practice is permitted in Pennsylvania.
Can a law firm ethically maintain a virtual law office? The Pennsylvania Bar Association Committee on Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility answered that very question in its recent opinion entitled "Ethical Obligations on Maintaining a Virtual Office for the Practice of Law in Pennsylvania" (FEO 2010- 200). The short answer: Yes, Pennsylvania attorneys can maintain a virtual law office while still meeting their ethical obligations as attorneys.

Anthony Davis, a partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP in New York, advises lawyers and law firms on professional responsibility and legal ethics, particularly in the area of risk management. The clinical legal education model teaches the basics of lawyering not otherwise taught in law school: a practical understanding of the practice of law, how to deal with difficult legal ethics issues, professional skills, and the doctrines that matter. Clinical education also teaches a more personal lesson; it instructs law students to question the machinery of society, instills socially responsible values, and teaches students to address social inequities.
