Richard Lugar, R-Ind., has called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to halt the practice of deporting certain immigrant students who are in the country illegally until the issue can be addressed legislatively. In a letter co-signed by Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and dated April 21, Lugar said many of those facing deportation soon may have a path toward assuming legal status under the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2009 - the so-called DREAM Act - a measure that permits undocumented students to become permanent legal residents under certain conditions.
