These days, athletes' off-field personas seem to be just as important as their on-field skills. That's why many of today's emerging sports stars are protecting the nicknames and catchphrases that have made them famous.
After the Washington Nationals' 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper sent a mammoth home run deep into the stands at the Rogers Centre against the Toronto Blue Jays on June 12, a Canadian reporter asked if he would celebrate with a beer.
Harper is of legal age to consume alcohol in Canada, but the devout M...

Alcohol sales data provide a more accurate indication of alcohol consumption than alternative methods such as population surveys. This information can be used to better understand epidemiological issues related to alcohol consumption, policy development and evaluation. Official sales records were collected for the 28 regional districts of British Columbia (BC) for 2002-2005, while homemade alcohol was estimated from survey data. Alcohol consumption rates were found to vary across geographic regions, by season, and with population level demographics. Government stores were the largest source of alcohol consumption in BC, accounting for 45.1% of total alcohol consumption in 2004. U-Brews/U-Vins accounted for 4.0%, private liquor stores accounted for 27.5% of the total, and homemade alcoho...

COBURN GORE -- A difference in laws between Canada and Northeast states that border Canada was behind Friday's launch of the Traffic Safety Without Borders operation.
Officers from Franklin County Sheriff's Department, along with Maine State Police, Oxford County Sheriff's Department, Coos County New Hampshire Sheriff and New Hampshire State Police met Friday at the Coburn Gore border, located at the end of state Route 27 in northern Franklin County, and partnered with Quebec Provincial Police to begin the program. Other law enforcement agencies from Maine to New York are participating.

On April 23, the issue again became critical for the government, as the "Toronto Globe and Mail" carried a front page lead from Kandahar describing the treatment received by prisoners handed over to Afghan authorities. Those interviewed described decent treatment by Canadian forces but something far different from the Afghans. The subhead of the lead story sums it up: "Savage beatings, electrocution, whipping and extensive cold.
Editorially, the "Globe" declared, "All of Canada's assurances have proved false on the detention of prisoners handed over to the Afghan authorities. The prisoners appear to have been tortured, anil Canada is hardly in a position to claim it did not know what was going on. At best, it tried not to know; at worst, it knew and said nothing."

The school and its coaching staff do a good job making sure they realize the potential ramifications, even if the players are over 21, former player Scott McCulloch said.
