I think it is time that we to 18. The recent tragic deaths of the four Manheim teenagers should be proof enough.

More than 100 college and university presidents are advocating that the legal drinking age be lowered from 21 to 18. Their effort is called the Amethyst Initiative ( www.amethystinitiative.org ).
Public response has been so vehement in opposition to the proposal that the presidents are emphasizing that they only want an "informed and unimpeded debate." But we cannot imagine why they would want to debate a topic if they didn't have change in mind.

WASHINGTON - In a speech today at a conference on alcohol, drug abuse and violence in higher education , LeMoyne-Owen College president Johnnie B. Watson plans to forcefully speak out against lowering the drinking age.
Watson, who taught at Rhodes College and was a superintendent of the Memphis City Schools, will ask fellow panelists, "how could over 100 college presidents advocate lowering the drinking age to 18 years when the data substantiate that alcohol consumption impairs judgment and contributes to a litany of other ills and health concerns for students and for society?" according to his prepared remarks.
