Two clean water groups are taking legal action against the Municipal Authority of the City of McKeesport and another treatment plant in Greene County to get the facilities to stop dumping treated wastewater from Marcellus shale drilling into the regional watershed. Clean Water Action and Three Rivers Waterkeeper announced they were taking federal action against the authorities at a press conference held near the MACM treatment plant in the city's Tenth Ward on Thursday.
Oregon's Clatsop County is taking legal action against one of its own cities, Astoria, over whether the county or the city owns land in a nearby city, Warrenton. The county board of commissioners on Wednesday voted to file a suit in Clatsop County Circuit Court to press its claim that the county owns two lots in Warrenton that it deeded to the city of Astoria in 1958. The county needs the lots, which total about 46 acres, in order to meet federal wetland mitigation requirements for the development of a business park nearby.
Shelby County school board members gave the chairman and superintendent the green light Thursday to take any legal action they deem necessary to block consolidation with city schools, even as a legal education expert they hired told them there may be no stopping it. Attorney Chuck Cagle, who has had a major role in at least five school consolidations in Tennessee, said the will of voters usually prevails on consolidation issues. The suburban district retained Cagle after the Memphis City Schools board voted last month to give up its charter.

HORSHAM, Pa. -- Child-labor permits should have been obtained for children appearing on the TLC television show "Jon & Kate Plus 8," but the state will not take legal action against the producers, Pennsylvania regulators have concluded. No action will be taken if a portion of proceeds from the now- canceled reality program are put into a trust fund for Jon and Kate Gosselin's children and child-labor permits are obtained for future filming, the state Department of Labor & Industry said in a ruling made public Wednesday.
