Hurricane Katia strengthens MIAMI -- The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Hurricane Katia had strengthened to a Category 2 storm in the open Atlantic. There are still no watches and warnings in effect and it's too soon to know if it will threaten land. A forecast map predicts that the storm will take a turn to the north in the middle of the week, but it's difficult to predict a storm's path days in advance. On Sunday night, the storm's center was about 385 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and moving northwest at 13 mph. It had sustained maximum winds of 105 mph.

Before you step foot on this most northern of the Leeward Islands, understand a thing or two about it and set aside narrow visions of what a Caribbean paradise should be.

The Leeward Islands captain [Wilden Cornwall] (tefll and Barbados' skipper [Ryan Hinds] (centre), collect the winners' trophy from Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) president, Paul Campbell, following the final of the WICB Regional 50 Over Tournament at Sabina Park yesterday. The game ended in a tie.
Thanks to a sixth-wicket partnership between Kirk Edwards, who top scored with a 90-ball 44, and Morris, who made 26, Barbados were able to get back into the match as Cornwall, surprisingly, went to his secondtier bowlers Taylor and Steve Liburd instead of keeping on the pressure by bowling out bis top bowlers at the time, [Lionel Baker] and leg-spinner [Anthony Martin].
As the excitement built up, Barbados, who at one time needed 18 runs to win with three wickets in hand, lost their way in...

Barack Obama is wintering in the Caribbean. His visage adorns T- shirts everywhere on this small dot in the Leeward Islands beyond the eastern tip of Puerto Rico, T-shirts worn by black, brown and white folk, natives and tourists alike.
Biographies of Obama and Michelle, written in French, line the window of a bookstore in Marigot, the capital of the French side of the isle. Caribbean music wafts over the eggplants, plantains and bottles of homemade guavaberry liqueur a visitor is taking home for the evening meal. Syncopated syllables of Barack Obama's name are set to the music that makes everyone want to dance in the street.

Next year's regional first-class championship opens on January 9, and it will again feature seven teams - the six traditional, territorial sides of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands, as well as the Combined Campuses and Colleges - with one of the teams 'sitting-out' in each round of matches.
In the opening round of matches, Leeward Islands are set to host reigning champions Jamaica at Warner Park in St Kitts, traditionally-strong Barbados face last season's runners-up Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval in Barbados and Windward Islands meet Guyana at Queen's Park in Grenada.
