Surely it speaks to the shame and shallow moral commitments of religious and political leaders who offer a betraying silence or give vote-and-fondspandering support for Israel's recent savaging of Lebanon and its ongoing occupation and brutalization of Palestine. In a similar situation during the brutal U.S. war against Vietnam, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood up in courage, in spite of the cost, and called for an end to that unjust war. He said that there comes a time when silence in the face of injustice and oppression is a betrayal of our highest ideals and that we must thus, put forth "a firm dissent" to official and popular positions "based on the mandates of (our) conscience and reading of history." Indeed, he taught us, "we must find new ways to speak for peace...and justice throug...
This article follows the fate of the only seven Shi'i villages in Mandatory Palestine, beginning in the time of the border demarcation between Palestine and Lebanon (1919-1924) and concluding with Hizbullah's demand to retrieve their territories back to Lebanon (2000). The article examines the relations of the villages with the Jewish Yishuv and with the Sunni population in Palestine during the British Mandate; their fate as Palestinian refugees in Lebanon; and their status in Lebanon after the 1994 naturalization law that granted them Lebanese citizenship. The story of the seven villages is examined through three prisms: that of the villages themselves, of the Palestinians, and of the Lebanese. The different narratives enlighten themes such as the colonial legacy in the Middle East, bo...
The head of Palestinian Authority intelligence and Fatah militia leader. Tawfiq Tirawi, said in an interview with the "Sunday Times" on October 8, "We are already at the beginning of a civil war, no doubt about it. They (Hamas) are accumulating weapons and a fullscale civil war can break out at any moment." The paper cited Palestinian sources saying that Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas "has notified the U.S., Jordan and Egypt that he is preparing to take action against Hamas." And, asserting that Hamas "is preparing for a war against us," Tirawi "forecasts that the violence would begin in Gaza and spread to the West Bank." Hamas leaders, including Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, have issued strenuous reassurances that they will never allow civil war, even as a Fatah-affiliat...
The number of Arab governments truly antagonistic to the US dwindled to almost none once Saddam Hussein was removed from power in early 2003. However, regimes that have long been friendly to the US are increasingly reluctant to follow Washington's lead on any issue. They are not enemies of the US, but they are not faithful allies, either. They have chosen diplomacy and reconciliation in their own relations with Iran, and they have tried to act as intermediaries and peacemakers in Lebanon and Palestine. This new independence of Gulf countries will be a challenge for the next US administration. Washington can no longer assume that the Gulf countries will follow its lead even if they do not like its policies. But this new assertiveness and independence are also an opportunity for the US to...
Lasting peace and cooperation in the Middle East will not be achieved if peace negotiations between Israel and Arab countries focus solely on the normalization of relations between these countries. The region's long-term stability depends on the resolution of a number of fundamental issues. These include the status of east Jerusalem, and the economic and political conditions of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.

Jamilah Rasheed AFTER the destruction and death of Sept. 11, we realized the effect violence has on human beings physically and mentally. We thought we were transported to a neighborhood in Occupied Palestine or Beirut, Lebanon. We couldn't believe we were on the receiving end of such devastation. As long as it happened to someone else, we sat back and lamented about their sad state of affairs. When it hit home, we were shocked and appalled.
