WHEN discussing his amazingness, Newt Gingrich sometimes exaggerates somewhat, as when, discussing Bosnia and Washington, D.C., street violence, he said, "People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jan. 16, 1994). What primarily stands between us and misrule, however, is the Constitution, buttressed by an independent judiciary.
But Gingrich's hunger for distinction has surely been slaked by his full-throated attack on such a judiciary. He is the first presidential candidate to propose a thorough assault on the rule of law. That is the meaning of his vow to break courts to the saddle of politicians, particularly to members of Congress, who rarely even read the laws they pass.

I have lived within walking distance of the Arroyo Seco for 63 years. I feel blessed to have made countless outings into the area to walk in one of the best natural preserves in the middle of an urban zone that I can imagine. I usually walk along the trail by the flood control channel, but wander occasionally into the archery area if it is not being used. I actually prefer seeing archers making use of this area since I find it interesting to watch. I have never once felt that they took up space that I needed to walk through.
As to my personal safety, I have never felt any danger by being in proximity with the archers. I am usually more concerned about off- leash dogs than archers. Just like the casting pond, the Frisbee golf course or walking by the Brookside Golf Course and the speedin...

I. INTRODUCTION The past few decades have witnessed a herd of federal and state legislation aiming to protect the welfare of animals. Since the early 1960s, Congress has enacted over eighty animal protection statutes, such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).1 States have also passed a wide variety of prohibitions and regulations on animal cruelty, animal fighting, Internet hunting, and puppy mills.2 This legislation has focused on protecting animals from needless suffering and restricting human behavior involving animals, rather than giving animals legal rights similar to humans.3 Given that the law considers animals to be property and that "pjroperty rights exist only if and to the extent they are recognized by our legal system,"4 the legal system...

Let's begin 2011 on a hopeful note: Texas A&M University officials say they will revisit a recent decision that would have banned journalism instructors from directing students in filing open- records requests about - of all things - Texas A&M policies and practices.
