  • Given the current economic climate, would it be a good idea to revisit the "buy or lease" options for some of our capital expenditures such as cars and trucks? Our company is in good shape financially, so cash flow isn't a major consideration. For years we've been leasing our vehicles. Does the extra leverage the economy gives buyers today make a purchase a better option? Unfortunately, there is no one-answer-fits-all solution to the buy-versus-lease decision. Since cash flow is not an issue, your buy/ lease decision is more an examination of options rather than a cash- driven decision.

  • EPA and NHTSA, on behalf of the Department of Transportation, are issuing this joint proposal to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy for light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-2025. This proposal extends the National Program beyond the greenhouse gas and corporate average fuel economy standards set for model years 2012-2016. On May 21, 2010, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum requesting that NHTSA and EPA develop through notice and comment rulemaking a coordinated National Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of light-duty vehicles for model years 2017- 2025. This proposal, consistent with the President's request, responds to the country's critical need to address global climate change and to reduce oil consumption. NHTSA is proposing C...

  • More developers and real estate investors nationwide are noticing the value of building projects along transit lines as Americans' interest in taking public transportation increases. Transit-oriented developments are typically composed of a mix of properties, uses, people and transportation options like light-rails and heavy rails, street cars and bus lines. The concept is certainly catching on, in both central business districts and the suburbs, as public transportation becomes more popular. This reconfiguration of the American dream and subsequent interest in transit-oriented development is proving lucrative for real estate investors. Real estate managers involved with transit-oriented development are being rewarded with high lease rates and above-average market rents. While interest ...

  • * Check coverages. Owners of older or inexpensive cars should consider dropping Comprehensive and Collision coverages. Doing that can save hundreds of dollars each year. Also, many auto insurers give you the option to add rental coverage to your policy, which pays for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired following an accident. While conditions and costs vary from company to company, it may be unnecessary if you can find other transportation. The same goes for options like Roadside Assistance coverage; if you have AAA or a lease agreement, you likely don't need it on your auto policy.

  • Consumers who lease vehicles are confronted with a decision after a few years of ownership. Do I give back the car after the contractual lease period ends, or do I buy it? The decision can spawn uncertainty and angst. And it's more relevant today than ever because of low buyout prices written into lease contracts several years ago versus today's unusually high used- vehicle prices. The result is that many consumers will discover they can buy their leased car for less than market value. That makes it a financially good idea to buy the vehicle, even if they only want to resell it and pocket the difference.
