CHICAGO - One day of owners' meetings could turn into two. Whether that's a sign of progress toward the end of the lockout and labor peace is debatable. NFL owners will gather today, and perhaps into Wednesday, to discuss the status of negotiations with the players for a new collective bargaining agreement. This is the first meeting called by the league strictly for labor matters, and the 32 team owners and representatives who will be on hand were advised last week to prepare to stay an extra day.
BEAVERCREEK -- The Beavercreek Women's League meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 1, will feature a performance of holiday music by the Beavercreek High School a capella choir. Visitors and guests are welcome to attend.
The Minnesota Vikings have played only five games, yet the season has already seemed like a long one for Brett Favre. The 41-year-old quarterback has been nursing his right throwing elbow through tendinitis and he's taken some big hits, too. His team is 2-3 in a year the Vikings pulled out all the stops to reach the Super Bowl after falling one game short last season.
WHITTIER - League of Women Voters of Whittier will gather for a consensus meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Whittier Public Library's Nixon Room, 7344 S. Washington Ave. The topic will be the Los Angeles County Jail System Study.
NBA NEW YORK - The NBA players' association wanted a meeting and said the league would grant one - under one condition.
Finally, more than halfway through February and less than two weeks before the close of the regular season, the Colonial Athletic Association's first- and second-place men's basketball teams meet on the court. George Mason and Virginia Commonwealth cross paths at long last tonight at the Siegel Center in Richmond. It's the lone meeting between the Patriots and Rams, which adds to the stakes - and the anticipation.
MORGANTOWN - Big East Conference coaches, administrators and executives descend upon Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., this weekend for the most important round of league meetings since, well, the last time a rival conference readied for a raid. Seven springs ago, the Atlantic Coast Conference meetings in nearby Amelia Island, Fla., preceded the Big East's meetings. From the ACC's gathering came a prompt and unexpected decision for the conference presidents to vote on expansion.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Jon LeCrone sat at a table in the downtown Indianapolis lobby of the Omni Hotel, pushing around a small cup of Starbucks coffee and reminiscing. My first day on the job was a league meeting in this very building," said LeCrone, the Horizon League Commissioner, tapping the table top. "That league meeting was in this building, and I interviewed in this building. It's right back there. I can show you the room.
