CINCINNATI - The Reds sent struggling left fielder Jonny Gomes to Washington for two minor leaguers on Tuesday, a move that opens an outfield spot for one of their best young hitters.
Former first-round pick Yonder Alonso was called up from Triple- A to take Gomes' spot, giving the defending National League Central Division champions another left-handed hitter who can play left field and back up Joey Votto at first base.

Matt Holliday homered twice hours after being picked to represent the National League in the Home Run Derby and Jaime Garcia had another stingy home outing for St. Louis in the National League Central Division-leading Cardinals' 8-1 romp over Cincinnati Tuesday night in St. Louis.
Holliday totaled 77 homers the last three seasons and entered the game with just 10 in 62 games. He powered up against Edinson Volquez (5-4) with a solo shot in the first and three-run homer in the fifth for his 16th career multi-homer game and first since July 7, 2010, at Colorado.
