  • This paper provides a comprehensive study of the causality between pay and performance for professional sports teams. By using the total salary payment, as well as the dispersion of salary payment of the baseball teams in Taiwan, we engage in a simultaneous regression of a Granger Causality Test for each team's salary structures and their corresponding performance. Our empirical results show that the causality only runs from the dispersion of salary payment to team performance, and not vice versa. As such, both the tournament hypothesis, which emphasizes the effect of salary dispersion, and the Yankee paradox, which proposes the negative externality for a team with high payroll, are thus confirmed. The one-way causality results suggest that teams must rely more on internal wage adjustme...

  • Joe Maddon has a knack for making zany concepts work for the Tampa Bay Rays. Now other major league clubs not only have taken notice, they're following his lead.

  • Outspoken in his commitment to advancing opportunity for African Americans, [Lester Granger] pushed tirelessly to integrate the racist trade unions, and led the League's effort to support A. Philip Randolph's March on Washington Movement to fight discrimination in defense work and in the armed services. Under Granger, the League, through its own Industrial Relations Laboratory, had notable success in cracking the color bar in numerous defense plants. The nation's demand for civilian labor during the war also helped the organization press ahead with greater urgency its programs to train black youths for meaningful blue-collar employment. After the war those efforts expanded to persuading Fortune 500 companies to hold career conferences on the campuses of Negro Colleges and place blacks i...

  • BELMONT (D-II, Region 8) Coach: John Derr (10 seasons) 2009 record: 1-3, 3-7 Key returners: Tyshawn Gordan, jr., RB/DB Adam Flee, sr., WR/DB Extra points: Derr will lead a team that returns arguably its best player in Gordan, who rushed for more than 700 yards last season and, according to Derr, broke the school's single- game rushing record with more than 240 yards against Northridge. "He already understands that it could be tough for him, because he's clearly the targeted guy," Derr said. "After the season he had last year, he went out and got even faster by running track, so he's physically ready." In fact, many of the Belmont players got involved in track last spring. That's because Derr's defensive coordinator is also the school's track coach, so he convinced many of the players to...

  • It takes a lot to get me aggravated about issues in sports, but one sure thing is the claim that Buffalo has never had a championship team in any of its major sports football, basketball or hockey. Those arguing along that line take the position that the Bills' American Football League championships in 1964 and '65 don't count because the AFL was not major league.

  • The formation of a new professional indoor lacrosse league will be announced Tuesday in New York. Details about the timeline for the league, number of teams, etc., will be presented at that time. As you might expect, George Daniel, commissioner of the National Lacrosse League, will be watching closely. Also, as you might expect, he can't say too much about what this might mean for the NLL.
