A federal judge ordered Torrance plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Saks held on $4.5 million bond Wednesday during his first court appearance related to his federal disability insurance fraud case. In court documents, federal prosecutors argued that Saks should be held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles because of his criminal history, wealth and international contacts. Prosecutors are concerned that Saks could leave the area before trial if he is released from custody. Saks, they say, has about $10 million in cash available to him, an alias, foreign bank accounts and ties to his native Canada.

A Torrance plastic surgeon with a history of legal problems was arrested by federal agents this week on suspicion of defrauding four disability insurance companies out of about $4 million. Dr. Lawrence Saks, a Rolling Hills resident, is scheduled to appear in federal court today on multiple charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. Saks was arrested Monday at his medical practice, Madison Park Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center on Pacific Coast Highway.
