Over 300 Haitians and thensupporters rallied in front of the White House on June 4 to call on the [Barack Obama] administration to make a decision on granting some 30,000 Haitian immigrants Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The rally was sponsored by the Florida-based TPS Haitian Coalition and Haitian Citizens United Task Force Inc.
TPS is the most immediate, least costly form of aid the U.S. can provide, stated the Florida congressman. [Alcee L. Hastings] has a bill, with 40 cosponsors, that he introduced during the 110th congressional session that would make Haitian nationals in the U.S. eligible for TPS and also calls for adjusted immigration status to that of an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence.

In order to apply for naturalization, an applicant must be at least 18 years old. The applicant must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. You must have continuously lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years as a permanent resident, prior to applying. In addition, you cannot have a single absence from the U.S. for more than a year. Absences of more than 6 months but less than a year disrupt the applicant's continuity of residence.
