Officials with the University at Buffalo Law School are blasting U.S. News and World Report's recently released 2010 law school rankings, which dropped the 123-year-old institution from its list of the top 100 schools to its list of third tier schools.
In an e-mail to members of the school's Alumni Steering Committee, University at Buffalo Law School Dean Makau Mutua decried the ranking systems' methodology, citing the achievements the school has made in recent years.

After an uproar over law schools trying to game the ranking system, U.S. News & World Report changed how it calculated and presented its annual law school rankings.
But, at least in Missouri, the trends in the rankings of recent years continued. The University of Missouri continued a dramatic three-year slide, and The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law remained steady in the top 20, according to the rankings released last week.

The law blogs were all atwitter over the "new" rankings this week, but I'd been ignoring such stories until a Facebook post caught my eye. A former colleague wrote on her wall that graduates from two of the three law schools in San Diego have the highest debt load in the country, according to the same issue of U.S. News.

West Virginia University's College of Law cracked into the Top 100 American law schools in the 2010 U.S. News and World Report rankings.
Dean Joyce McConnell said law school faculty and staff have worked proactively to improve the school's national reputation, although she has known about the law school's quality for years.

For all the focus on critical thinking in legal education, law students tend to care a lot about numbers: LSAT scores, GPA stats, class rank.
So it's no surprise that as the annual U.S. News & World Report law school rankings leaked out, students in Missouri's four law schools were paying attention.

The University of Missouri School of Law has dropped to the 107th spot in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings, but Dean Larry Dessem isn't taking much stock in the report. "I'm disappointed but not particularly surprised," he said. "This is magazine marketing masquerading as social science.
The law school's ranking is down 14 notches from 93rd place last year. In 2010, MU tumbled from the 65th spot it held in 2009.
